Thom and Carol Carpenter founded CBD INC. in 1975 and were incorporated in 1977. Originally based in the tiny ham radio shed (pictured below), the growing company hired its first full-time employee in 1976.
The first automated machinery was purchased in 1980. The addition of more dedicated electronics assembly equipment required expansion. During the 1990's, a modern electronics manufacturing plant was built in Elgin, Illinois. CBD began Surface Mount Technology (SMT) in 1994. SMT equipment was purchased and a dedicated SMT line formed. In 1995, the company built a 12,000 square foot addition. Now totaling 20,000 square feet, the current plant houses Inventory, SMT, Shipping and Receiving.
The company founders continue to be actively involved in the daily operations.

CBD's plant is located in a suburb northwest of Chicago, 38 miles from the Loop and 22 miles from O'Hare International Airport.
